In 2017 Bitcoin soared from about $800 to $12,000. It was the first major sign of Bitcoin’s potential beyond being just a currency for ne’er-do-wells lurking the “Dark Web”. For financial publishers, it showed Bitcoin’s big promise as an investment for their readers…
“Get Rich from Bitcoin” promos followed thick and fast.
Remember, writing about what’s hot is a sure-fire way to get your reader’s attention.
Today’s swipe does that.
Except, instead of doing the obvious—and promising big riches from Bitcoin—it does the opposite.
Bitcoin will go to zero.
And 99.9% of all other “crypto” coins will be deemed worthless, too.
It’s a bold idea. Counter-intuitive. Risky.
The great Gary Bencivenga talks about his “Get Rich Slowly” promo working precisely because of this. In a world of “get rich quick” it was refreshing to hear a dissenting voice.
But sometimes, maybe most times, you have more sales success just telling your reader what they want to hear.
I’m not sure how “Bitcoin: Zero” did but I’m guessing not good simply because I haven’t heard much about it.
That doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea or the copy is bad. It could just be bad timing, or bad marketing.
With Bitcoin down more than 20% from its all-time high, could something like “Bitcoin: Zero” work today?
See for yourself…
