Thanks to Mike over at the excellent Swiped.co for originally sharing today’s swipe. I’ve just added my thoughts to it, however useful they may be.
This sales letter was written by Gary Halbert protege, the late Scott Haines. I’d never heard of Scott before but he left some legacy behind in his short life.
At the time, it must have been a huge coup for the publisher the get Trump to sign-off on something like this. So the fact they trusted Scott with the copy tells you how highly he was regarded in this biz.
Thought I don’t know how well his sales letter did, but Mike at Swiped says it did well. It went in the mail, too. Unfortunately, it seems things then fell apart. But that’s nothing to do with this copy…
It’s short, and follows a pretty typical structure. Except you’ll notice no ink is wasted on building credibility, it’s Donald Trump after all. There’s little pre-amble. No obvious Big Idea, except maybe the theme of being on the inside and learning from the man himself. Stuff like this probably just gets in the way and with a proposition like this–learn success from Donald Trump–why complicate things? Just get to the crux of it.
