With today’s swipe, I’m doing things a little differently…
I’ve added a bunch of notes to the lead of the sales letter, to explain some tricks and techniques the copywriter uses.
Since I didn’t write this sales letter, it’s pure guesswork. Just my opinion, which may or may not be correct.
Anyway, onto the swipe…
It’s the infamous “Can You Write a Letter Like This One?” for American Writers and Artists Institute (AWAI) by master copywriter Paul Hollingshead.
I don’t know too much about this except it was very successful and ran for years. Heck, it might have convinced more people to become direct response copywriters than anything else.
It’s a brilliant, effortless read. Full of big promise and conversational all the way.
When I bought the AWAI course way back when it wasn’t so much to learn how to write copy–I’d already read the classics like Scientific Advertising, Tested Advertising Methods, etc–but for the promise of access to paying jobs. I was trying to make it as a freelancer without much success…
In a very roundabout way, buying the course eventually led to me getting a job at Agora Financial in 2009 and those big paychecks, job assignments in Costa Rica, being my own boss and so on. “The writer’s life”, as promised.
So as big and unbelievable as some of these claims are, they’re true too. At least for some folks. See for yourself…
